Traducimos Ideas, No Palabras
Los proverbios son en ocasiones fáciles de traducir, por ejemplo: Better late than never se traduce claramente como Más vale tarde que nunca. Ésta es una traducción literal y en este caso, los dichos existen en ambos idiomas. Sin embargo, los proverbios no siempre son tan sencillos de traducir.
PRUEBA
Póngase a prueba con los siguientes proverbios, eligiendo la opción (a) o (b) como la mejor traducción.
1. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
a) Un pájaro en mano vale por dos en el arbusto.
b) Más vale pájaro en mano que cien volando.
2. The early bird gets the worm.
a) Quien madruga obtiene la lombriz.
b) A quien madruga, Dios le ayuda.
3. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
a) No mires a un caballo regalado en la boca.
b) A caballo regalado no se le miran los dientes.
En los tres casos anteriores, (a) muestra el significado literal de las palabras mientras que (b) traduce a nivel de ideas, siendo esta última una traducción que contiene bastante más significado.
VEHÍCULOS DE SIGNIFICADO
Etimológicamente, traducción significa “trasladar” o transportar significado de un idioma a otro. Las palabras utilizadas son simples vehículos que trasladan o transportan el significado a otro idioma y son de menor importancia que las ideas expresadas.

We Translate Ideas, Not Words
Proverbs are occasionally easy to translate, for example, Más vale tarde que nunca is quite clearly Better late than never. This is a literal translation and in this case, the sayings exist in both languages. However, proverbs aren’t always that straightforward to translate.
QUIZ
Test yourself on the following proverbs, choosing either (a) or (b) as the best translation.
1. Adonde fueres, haz lo que vieres.
a) Wherever you go, do what you see.
b) When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
2. Llovió a cántaros.
a) It rained by the pitcherful.
b) It rained cats and dogs.
3. De tal palo, tal astilla.
a) From such a stick, such a splinter.
b) A chip off the old block.
In all three cases above, (a) gives the literal meaning of the words whereas (b) translates at the level of ideas, a much more meaningful translation.
VEHICLES OF MEANING
Etymologically, translating means “carrying across”, or transporting meaning from one language to another. The words used are simply vehicles which carry across or transport meaning to another language and are less important than the ideas expressed.
