Don’t cancel your meeting due to Covid: Go virtual!
Of course nobody wanted the Covid pandemic to happen. But let’s focus on the positive for a few minutes. What have we learned? Much has been said about the advantages of working from home. If you’re like me, at first I welcomed the opportunity to stay at home and avoid those long frustrating commutes into work, but now I’m missing that face-to-face interaction. However, one thing we’ve all learned over the last six months is how to adapt-and I believe that will be useful in a post-pandemic world when perhaps our lives will become more of a combination of virtual and face-to-face activities.

Por supuesto que nadie quería que la pandemia por el Covid ocurriera, pero centrémonos en lo positivo por un momento. ¿Qué hemos aprendido? Se ha hablado mucho de las ventajas de trabajar desde casa. Si eres como yo, al principio recibiste con brazos abiertos la oportunidad de quedarte en casa y evitar esos largos y frustrantes viajes al trabajo, pero ahora imagino que te falta esa interacción cara a cara. Sin embargo, una cosa que todos hemos aprendido en los últimos seis meses es cómo adaptarnos, y creo que será útil en un mundo post-pandémico cuando quizás nuestras vidas se conviertan más en una combinación de actividades virtuales y cara a cara.

Having just provided simultaneous interpretation and the virtual platform for yet another international conference, I have to ask: why are some people cancelling or postponing their conferences and waiting for a post-Covid world? Some experts say that Covid will be with us for a long time, if not permanently. So we must learn to adapt. Don’t put your organization’s business on hold.

Algunos expertos dicen que el Covid estará con nosotros por mucho tiempo, si no es que permanentemente. Así que debemos aprender a adaptarnos. No dejes en espera los negocios de tu organización.

Our last virtual conference was an 8-day multi-room General Assembly and associated meetings with 100 participants from 20 countries that in a Covid free world would have taken place in Canada. Instead of canceling it, with some trepidation, the organization decided to go virtual and hold it on the same dates. Apparently there was some skepticism about its effectiveness, but it was a resounding success!

Nuestra última conferencia virtual fue una Asamblea General de 8 días con varias salas paralelas y reuniones asociadas con 100 participantes de 20 países, que en un mundo libre de Covid habría tenido lugar en Canadá. En lugar de cancelarla, con cierto nivel de temor, la organización decidió realizar la reunión virtualmente en las mismas fechas planeadas originalmente. Aparentemente había cierto escepticismo sobre su eficacia, ¡pero fue un éxito rotundo!

Pros and cons of virtual events
Of course there are disadvantages to virtual conferences that are probably quite obvious. Nothing can replace personal contact, networking and going out to dinner in the evening after a long day of talks as a way to establish relationships across nations and continents, but that’s exactly what we now have to avoid with social distancing to prevent Covid.

Por supuesto que hay desventajas al realizar conferencias virtuales que probablemente son bastante obvias. Nada puede reemplazar el contacto personal, la interconexión personal y las cenas por la noche después de un largo día de conversaciones como una forma de establecer relaciones entre naciones y continentes, pero eso es exactamente lo que ahora debemos evitar con el distanciamiento social para prevenir el Covid.

There are also many significant advantages. Cost is probably the most obvious one since there are no travel expenses and no hotels, venues, meals or coffee breaks to pay for. The fact that these don’t need to be organized also makes the logistics easier. It also means that more people are able to attend who otherwise may not have been able to do so.

También hay muchas ventajas significativas. El costo es probablemente la más obvia, ya que no hay gastos de viaje ni se deben pagar hoteles, salones para las reuniones, alimentos o refrigerios.
