Global Translations
Perhaps the most interesting parts of my work are the people I get to meet from all over the world and the unusual variety of projects that I get to work on.

Although many translations are conducted by email, one develops relationships across hemispheres through correspondence. I am frequently lucky enough, moreover, to meet many of these clients when they visit Guatemala, the country I am currently living in.
The organisations I work with range from European, North American and Guatemalan governmental organizations and international NGOs to very small Guatemalan NGOs. I’ve had the good fortune to be an interpreter at a number of meetings with Guatemalan and Honduran presidents – but also with Prince Andrew from the U.K. I’ve had relationships for over 10 years with clients from Denmark, Holland, Belize and, of course, Guatemala.
Over the past two years I’ve been teaching online courses in translation for New York University and have worked through these courses with students from different parts of the US and Central America. Each summer I visit London and teach a course at Brunel University; the course is designed to help master’s degree students perfect their academic English before entering an English speaking university. At Brunel, I work with students from all over Asia and the Middle East.
One of the challenges of being a translator is being able to stay on top of all of the terminology from an incredible array of subjects. One day I will be working on a food security project, the next day on the conservation of coral reefs in the Caribbean. I work with businesses on their customs forms and with families trying to get visas to foreign countries. I help people with their CVs and NGOs translate humanitarian development project proposals and reports into English. In order to efficiently translate new terminology, I have a huge array of reference books – and a lot of translator friends that I can call on!
In my interpreting work I’ve travelled to the poorest villages that you can imagine in Guatemala and into prisons and police stations, schools and hospitals, but also to some of the most beautiful mountain farms that you’ve ever seen. I interpret and do translations on quality control, on the democratic process, on proper governance and on organising and managing development projects. I work with many groups visiting Guatemala, including government officials, students on study abroad programs and visiting staff from NGO headquarters in foreign countries.
I have the most wonderful and varied job imaginable. I get to work with people from all over the world on an amazing variety of projects. They say that continuing to learn throughout your life is the most effective way to live to be a hundred – with my work I’m on the right course.

Uno de los retos que se enfrenta al ser traductor es el hecho de tener que estar al día con toda la terminología de una amplia gama de materias. Un día puedo estar participando en un proyecto sobre seguridad alimentaria y al siguiente estaré trabajando en otro sobre la conservación de los arrecifes de coral en el Caribe. Trabajo con empresas en sus formularios aduaneros así como con familias que desean obtener visas para ingresar a países extranjeros. También presto ayuda a personas para la elaboración de su Currículum Vitae y ayudo a las ONGs con la traducción al inglés de sus informes y de las propuestas de proyectos de desarrollo humanitario. Con el objetivo de traducir correctamente la terminología nueva, poseo una amplia biblioteca de libros de referencia – ¡así como varios amigos traductores a quienes puedo consultar!
Como intérprete he viajado a los pueblos más pobres de Guatemala, además de visitar las cárceles, escuelas, hospitales y algunas de las áreas de producción agrícola en las montañas más bellas de ese país. Realizo interpretaciones y traducciones sobre temas de control de calidad, el proceso democrático, transparencia en el gobierno y sobre la organización y el manejo de proyectos de desarrollo. Trabajo con muchos grupos que vienen de visita a Guatemala, incluyendo funcionarios de gobierno, alumnos en programas de intercambio y personal de las principales sedes de ONGs extranjeras.
Tengo la profesión más maravillosa y variable que podría imaginarse. Tengo la oportunidad de trabajar con gente proveniente de alrededor de todo el mundo y en una amplia variedad de proyectos. Dicen que el aprendizaje a lo largo de toda la vida es la manera más efectiva de llegar a cumplir los cien años – con mi profesión voy por el camino correcto.
